Welcome to the Brownwood Green News,
a digital newsletter covering policy, funding, and public meetings concerning local ecology in Brownwood and Brown County, Texas.
Motto: “Burned out on national politics? Try local engagement!”
This newsletter intends to answer the question “How can ordinary citizens affect local policy and funding related to their local environmental concerns, including pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change?”
It is part of a broader movement to rebuild local news, and provide solutions journalism in every community, especially small towns.
The primary goal is to alert and connect readers to the many public meetings where they can observe and participate in the policy and funding decisions that affect their local environmental quality. Each edition of the newsletter includes a civic calendar with links to the offices, agencies, and elected bodies holding these meetings.
The primary focus is on land use decisions related to Brownwood and Brown County’s increasing vulnerability to catastrophic droughts, wildfires, severe storms, and flooding, as the climate crisis intensifies.
The newsletter is based on the conviction that direct action is the best antidote to alienation, apathy, disillusionment, and despair.
The model is Brad Johnson’s Hill Heat newsletter, which takes the same approach at the national level, covering congressional hearings and meetings in Washington D.C.
